Apparently even my metaphors have to be dramatic.

I wish I could tell you that once I found love and started building a new life, everything became easy.

It did not.

After getting married, our whole lives ahead of us also met the excitement of creating a family together. At five months pregnant, I was sitting on my porch eating dinner when I was literally run over by a car.

Yes. Really. A drunk driver ran off the road and directly into me. 

I was almost life flighted. I spent more than a month in a wheelchair. I have massive leg scars from lacerations, I don't have feeling in my feet or toes, and I am hoping my right hand works right again soon. But I lived and so did the baby.

Angels are real, and I will never eat on a sidewalk cafe.

When Life Knocks You Down

There are moments when all the plans disappear and life becomes very small.

Get through today. Protect the baby. Recover. Accept help. Do the next thing.

I had spent years being strong. Suddenly I had to let other people help me. Suddenly I couldn't do simple tasks. Suddenly I realized I couldn't even reach the shelves at the super market. 

What Love Looked Like Then

This was no longer love demonstrated by opening a car door or pulling out a chair.

It was love when life was frightening, inconvenient and hard.

The little acts had already taught me who my husband was. The hard ones confirmed it. He push my wheelchair. He washed my hair. He dressed me. He loved me when I had nothing to give.

Not the Ending

I had already learned that a life can fall apart without being over.

Now I was learning it again in a completely different way.

I was hurt. I was pregnant. I was in a wheelchair. 

And, our story was still moving forward.

I had been knocked down.

I was not finished.
