Your life is happening somewhere beyond the screen.
Look up.
It may be one of the simplest pieces of advice in the entire Consuming Goodness philosophy.
Our phones are useful, entertaining and sometimes necessary. They are also remarkably good at convincing us that whatever is happening on a little screen deserves more attention than the life happening around it.
Be Here
Look up when you walk. Put the phone away when you drive. Look at the person sitting across from you. Watch your children play. Notice where you are.
Safety is part of it - distracted driving and walking can have serious consequences - but presence is bigger than safety.
Sometimes we miss ordinary life because we are busy documenting it, scrolling through somebody else's life, or worrying about tomorrow.
The Here and Now
Matthew 6 reminds us not to spend today consumed by tomorrow's worries.
That does not mean we stop planning. It means we remember to live the day we have actually been given.
Take the picture. Then put the phone down.
Watch the sunset instead of watching somebody else's sunset. Take the walk. Find the butterflies. Sit on the porch. Pray without notifications competing for your attention.
Look Up
There is a whole world above the top edge of your phone.
Some of the best things in it will never send you a notification.
Be here. Be now. Look up.
Good in. Good out.
